Description

Pimento (Pimenta dioica) comes from the Myrtaceae family and is closely related to clove, eucalyptus, guava, and the bay rum tree. Pimento is the only spice that is grown exclusively in the Western Hemisphere and is native to southern Mexico, Central America, and the West Indies.

It is believed that pimento was first used by the ancient Mayans and Aztecs, who both used pimento along with cocoa and vanilla to flavor their favorite chocolate drink.

Its rich flavor resembles several other spices at the same time: pepper, cinnamon, nutmeg, and cloves. That is why this spice is also called “four-spice” or allspice.

They create a rounded, harmonious note when mixed with pepper or added to pepper blends. Allspice berries can also be used in fragrant potpourris. Pimento is used to flavor foods such as:

  • Sauces, spices, curries, and chutneys, as well as other dishes
  • It is used as a warming ingredient in foods and wine.
  • It is used to flavor sausages and pickles.

Allspice berries are very suitable as a curing spice forüFish, especially herring, cucumbers, and mixed pickles, as well as sauerkraut, are good examples of the use of allspice.

But marinades, stews, and soups can also be very well seasoned with allspice.

With its warm and spicy aroma, allspice fits very well in spice blends for mulled wine and punch.

Every Mexican allspice sold contributes to the development and support of local communities.
